This is a very fun thing to do. I have created many animated GIFs of my grandchildren, the links of which I will provide at the end of the answer. So this is the method. 1. Open your image in Photoshop and copy the background layer to new layer by pressing ctrl+J. 2. Make any changes you want to this second layer. You can use any method to make the changes. For example. if you want to make an animation of a ball moving, you can just use move tool. 3. Copy the second layer to third layer and make further changes. 4. Go on copying the layers until you reach a position which you think would be final frame. Here I have made five layers with slight change in position of legs and hands (the photo is of my grandson). I have used ‘puppet warp’ tool to edit the position of legs and hands. (I am not explaining about how to use puppet warp, because the answer becomes too big and deviates from original question. At the bottom left corner you will see timeline window. Each frame has some options like animation time etc. You can choose whatever options you want. 7. After choosing the options for each frame save the file as GIF. For this you have to execute the command file>save for web. The dialogue box would be as follows. You should not leave the preset option blank (shown in red ellipse). If you leave it blank the file will be saved as normal GIF but not animated GIF. Here I have chosen 128 dithering.
