How do I create a DWG file from a PDF?

Simple answer. The latest version of Autocad (Autocad 2017) has PDF Import capabilities which are very good. Earlier versions of Autocad had a capability to attach a PDF file as a bacground (as a reference) and you could draw over that. With this version you can actually convert a PDF file in to Autocad entities. I will demonstrate it using an actual file here. This is the pdf file I have picked at random. It is a district map of a district from Bihar, India. I have placed it in Autocad here by dragging and dropping. Then we use the command PDFIMPORT You can import a file directly or use an already attached PDF. I selected the already attached PDF. Then there are various options for settings. After importing and detaching the original PDF this is what have got. This is not PDF these are all Autocad entities. This is zoomed in view of the drawing. Conclusion . You do not have to go anywhere else to convert a PDF to Autocad drawing now. It can be done within Autocad. Note . Images mad by me for demonstration from screenshots. The pdf file downloaded from NIC website. The reality …. Though you may rejoice now that you can convert a pdf to Autocad what you really get will vary from case to case. You need to understand the difference between a Raster (graphic) PDF and a Vector (graphic)PDF and the difference between text as TEXT in PDF or a s graphic. Since PDF can contain all kinds of graphics a proper conversion to Autocad entities is not guaranteed in all cases. It works ideally on PDFs that are created from Autocad or some other cad software itself. There is also the issue of non continuous lines conversion. I may discuss these issues in another Question or a post whenever time permits.

Create PDF: All You Need to Know

The key is to know as much as possible about PDF as it is part of almost every CAD system but also includes many other proprietary formats as well. All in all, do not get too excited if you are using a product that supports PDF in a desktop program. And, remember though PDF will not appear as a drawing in any CAD package if the document is open, or you have the PDF on your computer.
