I want to self-publish a novel. Should I do this through Amazon or create a website and allow people to download my e-book as a PDF?

I would say that depends on the success level of your eBook. If your eBook is extremely successful, high number of sales and/or extremely highly rated reviews, this would probably raise the interest of a traditional publisher considerably. Almost certainly your ability and budget to promote your eBook are only a fraction of the publishers’ resources to publicize your work. T could view your book as having demonstrated that it has a definite market. A publisher views your book as an investment. T can spend thousands producing and promoting a book. T must have good cause to feel your work would not only get back the money invested, but also make a profit. If, on the other hand, your eBook had dismal sales and/or poor reviews that could serve to considerably lower a publisher’s interest. Neither of these scenarios is set in stone, and each has many variables. Even if your book sold well a publisher might still be disinterested for a number of reasons, among them. just plain not liking the book, thinking your eBook has already saturated the market, thinking you paid people to write glowing reviews. (Yes, some authors have done this.) Conversely, your eBook could sell poorly and still interest a publisher. The most common reason for this would be if the publisher feels your work is good but was not fully promoted. You may have written the best book in history, but if people don’t know it exists t can’t buy it. No one knows this better than a publisher. My publishing route was just the reverse. I had six traditionally published paper books before eBooks even came into existence. So when my first eBook hit the market I already had a recognized name and a sizable reader base. Since there are so many unpredictable variables, my advice to you is the same that I give all writers, published or not, myself included. always put your best work out there. You never know who will see it and make something happen, both good and bad. That way, whatever happens, you’ll know you gave it your best shot.
