Is there a website where I can upload music I've created (PDF score or MP3) and have it critiqued, checked for mistakes and such?
Where can I get informed criticism for my musical compositions? Does such a website exist? If you are a young composer, let’s say under 27 or 30 the best way to get it is from your music teacher. What you really want is useful criticism rather that just informed. At 27 chances are that you are not in school anymore, but maybe some of your former teachers can give you a good advice. Criticism on music works (and on art in general) are a delicate issue. A hard critic can put your self esteem down to the floor, and as a composer that usually doesn’t take you anywhere. Criticism should be useful, that means that the critic should show you the door, a way to improve. When the critic just points your weak points, it’s useless, regardless whether it’s informed or not. Example. That bassline is not swinging. It can be informed criticism, but it doesn’t take you anywhere, it’s not enough to be useful. You can improve your swing if you accent 2 and 4 while you are walking. Much better, the critic is showing you the way. Another example. That theme is not consistent. The critic may be informed, but he is not being generous. If the theme is not consistent usually the composer is the first one who knows. A comment like that is not telling you anything you don’t know. You present a basic idea, but you don’t repeat it anywhere. You could repeat it on measure 5; you don’t need to repeat every note but you need to keep the most characteristic features. rhythm and melodic contour. Much better, don’t you think? The critic is pointing precisely something that you were not aware. A critic should never been done if the critic doesn’t know the solution. The critic should know precisely which the problem is, and in order to do that, the critic needs to be a real master. I remember a piano exam that I did, many years ago. The examiner was an english teacher. When I got the results the teacher had written down every single thing that could be improved, from phrasing to attack. He wrote down the measure numbers of all of his observations. That’s the point of doing an exam, that you get accurate and useful feedback from an expert. Now, my advice for you. Be extremely cautious when looking for criticism and consider that good criticism often SHOULD BE PAID. A good critic is a master class and the expertise of the critic has a value. Look for critic just if you are willing to pay. Otherwise, a good critic can be done by a very good friend, but that friend should be a master. If you have friends playing in a good orchestra, maybe t can give you an advice for free; if you have a friend who is a composer with solid education, maybe he can give you an advice. But if you are not in those circles, the best is to pay for it, that means to go to a teacher and to take a master class from him.

Good criticism can save you a lot of time. You don't need to find out the solution by yourself. You shouldn’t be able to see it anywhere in music. It will be easy enough to hear the issue that you are having in the middle of listening to the music you like. You know that you have a problem because you cannot play the next note without thinking of the chord you have just heard. There is often no logical reason, and it is not always obvious why the piece seems out of place. The composer knew it. What you need is not a good critic, a master who can give you the solution, but a friend who can tell you how to proceed, and who can help you overcome your problem. You are not looking for a solution right now, you are listening to music because you love music,.
